Meet the Ambassadors: Marco V. Ávila, P.E., Southeast Baltimore Segment

The Baltimore Red Line is made up of four segments. Each segment of the 14-mile corridor has its ambassador, communities, and opportunities. We spoke with Red Line Ambassador Marco V. Ávila, P.E., to learn more about his work in the Southeast Baltimore segment. This segment begins at Albemarle Street and ends at the Bayview MARC Station.

Tell us a bit about yourself; what do you do when you’re not working as a Red Line ambassador? And why did you become an ambassador?

I am a professional engineer with over 38 years of experience and I am actively involved in several professional societies including American Society of Highway Engineers (ASHE), American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE), American Council of Engineering Companies-Maryland (ACEC/MD), The Engineering Society of Baltimore (ESB). I am also the Engineers Week Council President, and a member of Engineers Without Borders and the Maryland Hispanic Chamber of Commerce (MDHCC).

I was asked to support the Red Line Communications and Engagement Team using my skills and experience in Mega projects, also to support the Hispanic Communities, and leverage my connections in Baltimore, and Maryland.

Tell us your favorite place to visit within your segment.

There are so many places to visit in the Southeast Baltimore section that is hard to determine a favorite place. Harbor East is always a great place to be.

What are the biggest challenges and opportunities for your segment?

The biggest challenge is to make sure the entire community is aware of the project and to make sure they get the latest information about the project. For this we need to partner with many organizations to spread the word.

What is the most common feature you get asked to implement at future Red Line stations?

The one common comment about amenities is to make sure there is parking available, convenient stations with proper ticket purchasing machines, easy access and ramps for ADA.

What do you want community members in your segment to know about the Red Line and your work?

We want to make sure the communities are informed and aware of the benefits of having the Red Line in Baltimore. To make sure they have the latest updated information and to make sure they know that this will help their everyday lives.

How can community members get in touch with you?
